Unit 44 is back and badder than ever
Written and Lettered by Wes Locher
Illustrations and Colors by Eduardo Jimenez
Independently Published
We had the joy of backing and talking about Issue 1 of Unit 44, and they kicked that story out in record time. Now they are back looking to complete issues 2 through 4, and yeah, get off your butt because in all honestly, this is the best comic book I have read this year.
When we initially reviewed it, we saw so much potential in the story line that we had to talk about it, and yes, when we got our first PDF copy of this bad boy we hit pay dirt. This comic book simply is this summer’s best science fiction comic book that we have seen or even remotely heard about.
I need a whole new scoring scale for this one, simply, it is the best comic book we have read all summer long, and is going to be in our top 10 list of independent comic books at the end of the year.
It is irreverent, funny, silly, and good for all ages, especially if you have kids, who have been doing nothing all summer but watching ancient aliens and ancient discoveries on TV, or playing science fiction video games like Halo or watching MIB till their eyes fall out and your sanity flees.
It isn’t often that I gush over a comic book, but this one hit the nail on the head.
Two rednecks who live off what they find in public storage hit the biggest pile of crap when they purchase a storage unit belonging to our good friends at Area 51. The ensuing madness and mayhem with two semi competent MIB’s who just want their stuff back, aliens that want their stuff back, and poor Chester and Ike who are blissfully unaware of the mayhem they have just unleashed into their life. The ensuing pursuit of Chester and Ike with accompanying weirdness, strange weapons, and a space alien looking for what the government was holding on them just rounds out this story brilliantly.
Love it, good colors, good lettering, good story line, believable characters; it has everything a comic book should have, so yeah, go get a copy. I don’t know if they will print it, but they are so close to making the funding on their kickstarter for issues 2, 3, and 4 that you will want to jump in on this one. Go for one of the larger ones so you can play a bit part in the series.
I am going to rate this way over what I would normally rate a comic book, it has been so long since I have seen something this funny and this worthy that 5 stars isn’t enough, honestly since I have gotten such a huge kick out of this I’ll rate it 6 of 5 stars. This one is worthy; it was engaging and fun in ways I have not seen a comic book be engaging and fun in a while. Go visit their kickstarter and participate, go visit their web sites, and share the title, seriously good clean fun.
